District IX Jr. High Jazz Band

Registration deadline for band directors: Wednesday, December 18, 2024 (Student deadlines will likely be earlier. Ask your band director if you have questions)

Audition date and location:  Saturday, January 11, 2025, Location Madisonville Jr. High School 

Audition cost: $15 per audition slot, paid through the student's band program.  Please contact your student's band director for more information.

Audition Materials

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS (Scales, Prepared Materials, Practice Tracks)

The audition requirements for District Junior High Band Jazz are the same as All-State Middle School Jazz Band. The audition includes scales, prepared material, and sight-reading. All audition materials, including scales, rehearsal and audition tracks, have been written/recorded for LMEA and are available for download from https://lmeamusic.org/all-state/all-state-middle-school-jazz-ensemble/. All students are required to perform along with the tracks

Scales – Selected major scales will be required for the audition. A copy of the scale sheet for each instrument can be downloaded from the LMEA website’s All-State Middle School Jazz Ensemble page (found under audition requirements in link above) or from the links below.

Prepared Material – There is a 3-year rotation cycle of prepared materials that have been written for the LMEA Middle School All-State Jazz Ensemble auditions. All audition materials, including rehearsal tracks, can be found on the LMEA website. They have been written/recorded for LMEA and are available for download from this site. 

3-year Rotation of Scales, Prepared Materials, and Practice Tracks:

Set I – 2024-25

    Etude 1 (Swing) – Music and Practice Tracks 

    Etude 2 (Straight Eighths) – Music and Practice Tracks 

Set II – 2025-26

    Etude 1 (Swing) – Music and Practice Tracks

SIGHT-READING PROCESS

Sight-Reading – Students will sight-read a short selection as part of their All-State Middle School Jazz Ensemble audition.

District Jazz Band Rehearsals/Concert:

• If your child is selected as a member of the District IX Jr. High Honor Jazz band, there is a $20 participation fee.  Participation fee is to be paid directly to your child's band program.  Please talk with your child's director(s) to see how this fee will be handled.

• Schedule: As a member of this prestigious group your child is expected to be at the following rehearsals:

  • Wednesday, February 12, 2025 at Fontainebleau High School from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm.

  • Thursday, February 13, 2025 at Fontainebleau High School  from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm.

  • Saturday, February 15, 2025 at Fontainebleau High School Auditorium from 9:00 am to 11:30 am with a concert performance at Noon .

    • • Students should wear all black clothes for the rehearsal and performance on Saturday.
